The more creative and innovative a product package design is, the more likely it will stand out. An innovative food package design brings together many factors which must work together, starting with the conceptual idea, functionality, graphics to package structure and materials used.
As part of Shelf Impact!/Dragon Rouge's 2012 Innovation Survey of packaging, 15 product packages were selected and judged based on the following criteria:
1. The concept’s ability to provoke new ways of thinking about a category
2. The structure’s ability to present new ways of interacting with a product type
3. The packaging graphics’ innovative cues that help bring the product positioning to life
4. The use of innovative materials
5. The relative effectiveness of the packaging production process.
The top scoring packages picked by survey respondents were the Heinz Dip & Squeeze Ketchup Pack, the Philadelphia Cream Cheese Bakery Pack, and Orville Redenbacher's Popcorn Pop Up Bowl. Check out the food package design examples below to see if you agree with the top three picks.
